Putting people at the heart of the story.
We created a new body of imagery and documentary film for World Development & Relief, capturing the people and partners behind its work. Across communities and countries, we met the people driving change and those benefiting from it. The resulting image bank and long-form documentary bring their stories, voices and work to the forefront.
The Client
World Development & Relief is the Methodist Church in Ireland’s international development team, working alongside locally led partners to tackle global poverty. Its approach is built around people rather than projects, recognising that communities understand their own contexts, challenges and solutions better than anyone arriving from outside. WDR supports that local knowledge with long-term partnership, helping create greater access to clean water, food security, education and opportunity.
The Challenge
The challenge was never simply to document the work. Each trip meant entering cultures, languages, relationships and ways of communicating that were not our own. We needed to understand the context, earn trust and tell stories accurately rather than arriving as outsiders and immediately placing cameras in people’s faces. The work had to show both need and impact without reducing anyone to their circumstances, finding the human connection that allowed people to represent themselves with dignity.
The Solution
Working alongside local partners, we followed two connected areas of change: rural water management and food production, and disability rehabilitation and education. We spent time observing the work and building relationships before asking people to share their experiences. By filming water systems, farming, classrooms and rehabilitation alongside first-person accounts, we connected practical interventions with the people shaping and using them, creating stories grounded in dignity, capability and everyday life.
